25th Anniversary Celebration
Join us in creating a magical day for local children
“A Visit from Saint Nicholas” was created as a fundraising event for Volunteer Houston in 1987. It is based on the European tradition that celebrates anonymous giving. Many countries celebrate it in different ways. Saint Nicholas Day is traditionally celebrated on December 6th.
WHAT: A Visit From Saint Nicholas is a charitable project that provides a gift of a backpack filled with toys and books to disadvantaged children. It also allows supporting companies to volunteer their time and treasure to create a magical, emotionally uplifting and creatively stimulating experience for local underprivileged children.
WHO: Our goal is to serve 10,000 children attending pre-kindergarten through 2nd grade at elementary schools in Houston and the Bay Area. Recipient schools are selected where a majority of children qualify for the free/reduced lunch program, and are typically located in economically disadvantaged areas.
WHEN: A Visit From Saint Nicholas takes place on Saint Nicholas Day, December 6, 2012. WHERE: St. Nick will visit elementary schools in Houston and the Bay Area.
WHY: The project offers a convenient way for generous companies and individuals to connect with and support local students with the most need during the holiday season. With the classroom as a backdrop it imparts a lesson to students about service and volunteerism in their community.
HOW: Corporate and community volunteers fill backpacks in early November. Volunteers then deliver backpacks and decorate area schools on the day before the event. On Saint Nicholas Day, children arrive at school to discover that St. Nick has visited and left them a special gift!
